https://newsela.com/articles/seattle-sleepystudents/id/13724/ Several schools in Seattle, have moved the start time later for high schools, and most middle schools in the district, to 8:45 a.m.. Its about time. Many other schools in the U.S. are fortunately doing the same thing. Finally, teenagers are getting the sleep the proper amount of sleep.
For years, scientists have been recommending that schools start the day earlier. For years, the schools refused to listen. According to the many studies that have been done on this, teenagers are naturally supposed to fall asleep later, and wake up later as well. When they get the right amount of sleep, they improve on their academics, attendance, mental health, and reduce the amount of teen car accidents. The benefits are absolutely undeniable, but if so, why are many schools pushing the start times now, what were they waiting for?
One of the reasons that it so long for many U.S. schools to finally do something about the issue of teen sleep deprivation, is financial. It could cost schools millions to add new buses. Another obstacle, is parental resistance. Many parents don't appreciate the new times, due to the fact that it could mess with their schedules. However, schools have been able to overcome these, in order to make a better environment for their students.
I am ecstatic that these schools have pushed the starting time for teenagers to 8:45. I know how much of a pain it is to wake up so early every day. Teenagers need to get the proper amount of sleep in order to succeed, and the answer is not more school, its more comfort in school. I am hopeful that more schools will solve the same problem that Seattle schools, and many others have been.
